Noise is power! And what a rumbling, rattling, intense noise it is - constantly evolving rhythms and sound cascades, building and falling and rebuilding. Post-rock? Contemporary music? Free jazz? Avantgarde? Discard those tired old labels - The Soft Power Ensemble of Vienna defies all categorization. Two drummers, a bass player and too many guitars to count create a meandering sound that evokes bodies of flowing water, swelling and ready to burst their banks. The musicians hail from Poland, Columbia, Argentina, France, the US and Austria; they all currently live in Vienna. To make things short, here are some handy pigeonholes for you: naturally, this is about Noise, about improvisation; it is plain to hear that many of the musicians have grown up with Alternative Rock. Glen Branca comes to mind, as well as Godspeed? You Black Emperor - and one might even get the impression of witnessing a Sonic Youth band rehearsal. Of course, all those comparisons are quite lovely and may be quoted; and yet they do not manage to capture the band's true essence. This, ladies and gentlemen, is no less than the musical retelling of the genesis.

Kraft durch Lärm! Und was für ein grollender, rasselnder, intensiver Lärm es ist! Rhythmen und Klangkaskaden in ständiger Entfaltung – sie bilden sich heraus, zerfallen und entstehen immer wieder neu. Postrock? Zeitgenössische Musik? Free Jazz? Avantgarde? Vergesst die abgegriffenen alten Labels – das Soft Power Ensemble of Vienna entzieht sich jeder Kategorisierung. Zwei Schlagzeuger, ein Bass und unzählige Gitarren mäandern wie verrückt gewordene Wasserläufe, die auch mal über die Ufer treten dürfen. Die MusikerInnen kommen aus Polen, Kolumbien, Argentinien, Frankreich, den USA und Österreich und leben alle derzeit in Wien. Wenn Sie Journalist sind und Schubladen brauchen, bitte: Natürlich geht es um Noise, um Improvisation und man hört, dass viele der Musiker mit Alternativrock sozialisiert sind. Glen Branca mag einem einfallen, aber auch Godspeed? You Black Emperor. Vielleicht hat man auch den Eindruck, dass Sonic Youth hier proben. All diese Vergleiche klingen charmant, dürfen zitiert werden, und schrammen doch am Erlebnis vorbei. Hier wird die Schöpfungsgeschichte musikalisch nachempfunden.
